Jackson Ward

Featured here as a representative of Jackson Ward’s federalist style housing is the Meredith House, the second oldest house in the neighborhood. Settled primarily following the Civil War, Jackson Ward has always been a strong African American community. Figures such as Maggie L Walker, John Mitchell Jr, and Bill Bojangles lived in or frequented the community. In addition to  being a cultural hub for the black community, Jackson Ward was crucial for the Civil Rights movement in Richmond.

Today, it is home to families and VCU students alike. The neighborhood is also host to dozens of restaurants and galleries.
